Bowers Wilkins PX Review

It’s been quite a long time since I bought really upscale headphones. I’ve always been a Bowers and Wilkins fan, so when I heard they released a wireless pair that had all the great build and sound quality - I naturally wanted them.
The thing that stopped me from going for them straight away - was the price tag. Don’t get me wrong, you do pay for quality, but the price tag was something that I thought: I need to go out and test them out first before I go and fork out the money.
I went and found my local John Lewis store, and there they were. A lovely pair for testing. I downloaded the app to connect the headphones to the app, and away we were. They were quite easy to pair up with.
My music of choice, generally is EDM, and the song of choice that I usually play is a mix between the following:
- Mat Zo and Porter Robinson - Easy
- Audien - Hindsight
- Yellow Claw ft Ayden - Till it hurts
- Breathe Carolina & Apek ft Neon Hitch - Lovin
I put on the headphones, and put on the first track. On the 2 minute mark, is generally where the bass kicks in. I have to say… it… was… DISAPPOINTING.
There wasn’t much bass, just a small bit. The sound was flatter than usual.
I tested it with the other songs and there was some kicks out of it, but not much sub bass. I decided it might be best to leave these headphones for now. Walked out of John Lewis a bit disappointed with that experience.
Naturally curiosity got the best of me, along with impulse, and I decided to give the B&W PX a fair shot. For many of the B&W headphones, there’s been numerous times when people have suggested that they need a burn in period of about 25 hours of continuous play.
I bought a pair that were on sale from Amazon. Before I was able to jump straight into listening to it, I burned them in with my iPod for 25 hours on half volume. Once they were done, it was time to have a proper listen.
This time I tested it with different tracks:
- Sabrina Claudio - Frozen
- Skylar Grey - Back from the Dead
- Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody
So what did it sound like after a few hours of burning in?
They sounded AMAZING. The highs and mids were superb, probably ranging more on the bright side. And they were the type of headphones that you slip on and disappear into the music. They made you want to dance.
That’s for that genre of music, but what happens with EDM? If you listen closely enough, you can just about hear the sub bass, and it’s subtle. It’s got the kicks and so on, but not enough of the nice drops that you’d want to hear. To give you an example of what I mean by a drop:
- Last Heroes ft Satellite Empire - Take your time
- Three 6 Mafia - Late night tip
These are the songs that you listen to with a big subwoofer and appreciate the lovely rolling bass. The B&W PX don’t have that. But they do kick ass when the kicks come in.
Truth be told the PX aren’t really for EDM, they are more for pop/rock/classic, and they excel at that type of music.
As a pair of wireless headphones, they’re absolutely phenomenal. Extremely well detailed headphones, very well built, and luxurious. Overall I’ll say that these headphones are definitely worth the money. They’re incredible, that’s all you need to know.
