Primer on Identity

Why figuring out who you are is important

Let’s start off by saying this: Who you are, what you are, what you identify as, what makes up part of your personality, what makes you… you - ALL OF THAT is incredibly important.

Identity is something that is yours, and you should be incredibly proud of it. What makes each one of us unique is the ability to say that part of my identity belongs with this gender, this race, this culture, this religion (if you follow one), this virtue, this belief etc. It’s a worthwhile task to figure out part of your personality and why it’s like that. For example, why am I pro LBGTQ+, why do I like reading stoicism, what makes me dislike certain things, why should I stand up for something I believe in? All these make up part of the identity that belongs to you.

To live a very good life, it’s worth bearing in mind, you should also have something in your identity that matches up to the great virtues in life.

My virtues:

  • Work Hard
  • Be honest with yourself and those who matter the most to you
  • Keep your ego in check
  • Accepting you will be wrong most of the time, and continue to learn.

My identity: I’m a Chinese guy who is a gym rat. I love computing, and technology, I love working myself hard, and love to learn along the way. I believe in working hard for a living because life is not to be handed to you that fucking easily.

You work for the life that you want, and shape the life that you want. No excuses, no blaming others, you are responsible for smashing it.

You take responsibility for the shit that you do, good or bad, and don’t run away from it.

Overall, it may sound a bit Jocko Willink, however there’s a reason why he’s so successful. He lives and breathes what his identity is, you should too.
